Braves starting pitcher Derek Lowe was arrested Thursday night and charged with driving under the influence, reckless driving, and making an improper lane change. Here’s the video of the arrest:
Lowe was taken to the Atlanta city jail, posed for the mugshot below and was released early this morning on a $2,944 bail. According to the police report, Lowe was pulled over around 10 p.m. after state troopers spotted two cars racing down Peachtree Road. After detecting “a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage” on his breath, the troopers decided to initiate a field sobriety test. The veteran pitcher then refused to take a breathalyzer test.
Unfortunately, the decision of “not blowing into that thing” didn’t help Lowe’s situation as he was subsequently taken into custody and the 2011 Porsche Panamera he was allegedly racing was impounded.
After sobering up, Lowe released the following statement:
“I would like to apologize to my family, teammates, fans and the Braves organization for the attention arising from this matter, however I am hopeful that this incident will not be a distraction to the Braves organization while we are focused on returning to the playoffs… This is a legal matter and I anticipate this case can promptly be resolved within the court system.”
A Braves spokesman said that the team is obviously “concerned and disappointed about the events”, but did not give any further comment about the arrest or his status with the team. After investing $60 million in Lowe, we doubt any serious disciplinary action will take place on the behalf of the Atlanta Braves.
