Miguel Cabrera was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving in Florida around 11:00 p.m. on Wednesday night and charged with driving under the influence and resisting arrest, and cited for an open container of alcohol in a motor vehicle. He reportedly refused to take a breath test and was released early Thursday morning after posting his $1,350 bond.
According to the police report, Cabrera’s car was spotted on the side of the road with smoke coming from the engine. When the officer went to investigate, he noticed a drunk Cabrera with bloodshot, watery eyes and a flushed face take a swig of scotch and slur his
words in an attempt to explain the situation. Despite this great effort, the officer decided to call for back up, which was clearly not something Cabrera wanted.
To further plead his case, he wandered into the street with both hands up, asking the officer, “Do you know who I am? You don’t know anything about my problems.” Unfortunately, just like Legedu Naanee, this method did not work and the officers continued with their arrest.
After struggling to get him in the police car, an officer struck Cabrera several times in the left thigh with his knee causing Cabrera to fall into the back seat.
That gesture ended Cabrera’s night, but didn’t seem to crush his spirit, as evidenced by his mug shot shown above. Judging from that picture, no one would have guessed that he was reportedly “combative, argumentative and belligerent”, but that doesn’t mean he wasn’t.
This arrest is just the latest incident involving this 27-year old All-Star first baseman. He has had several run-ins with the police involving alcohol, the most recent coming from a fight with his wife. Even though no charges were filed for that case, Cabrera went into counseling and vowed to quit drinking alcohol, saying:
“You guys write in the paper ‘alcoholic’, that’s not right… I don’t know how to explain, but it’s not an alcohol problem.”
Well, if it’s not an alcohol problem, then he certainly enjoys drinking alcohol to deal with the problem. Hopefully, this arrest will wake him up and make him realize that he does have a drinking problem because it would be a shame to see him waste his career.
