Cleveland Indians outfielder Shin-Soo Choo was arrested in Ohio earlier this week on suspicion of drunk driving after he blew more than twice the legal limit during a breathalyzer test. He was taken to the local county jail and has since been released and currently remains on the Indians starting lineup.
According to the reports, Choo was spotted driving down the road with his flashers on. When an officer pulled him over, Choo explained that his GPS was broken and that he was lost and in need of directions to his house. This somehow worked because the officer let Choo go and even offered to follow him incase he got lost again.
After observing Choo swerve into the bike path and cross the double-yellow line twice, the officer realized he made a mistake and pulled Choo over again to figure out what the problem was. Upon closer inspection, the officer noticed that Choo’s eyes were glossy and bloodshot and that he smelled of “an alcoholic beverage”. This prompted the policeman to administer a field sobriety test, which consisted of Choo walking a straight line, standing on one leg, and touching his finger to his nose.
Choo failed all three tests with flying colors and even mixed up his right hand from his left hand. If that wasn’t enough, Choo also agreed to take a breathalyzer test, which showed that he had a blood-alcohol level of .201– more than double Ohio’s .08 legal limit.
The cuffs were pulled out not too long after that and Choo was taken to jail to sober up and to get ready for his mug shot.
Choo has since apologized for his actions, and to each team member individually. But that’s about all that he’s done. Since returning to the lineup after his arrest, Choo has been hitless and basically been a non-factor in the Indians series against the Oakland Athletics this week.
The Indians currently have the best record in the league, so if they want to hold on to that position, then they’ll need Choo to step it up and get over his arrest.
