Joseph Hyungmin Son convicted of torture

Former MMA fighter Joseph Hyungmin Son, who played “Random Task” in Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery, was arrested last week and charged with conspiracy to commit murder and torture.

After posing for his mugshot, he was later convicted of torture and will be sentenced in court on Sept. 9, where he faces 15 years to life in state prison.

Son has several other felonies under his belt, including rape and vandalism, but he cannot be convicted on those counts due to the statute of limitations.

According to the Orange County District Attorney’s office, Son’s DNA was extracted after he violated his parole in 2008, and it matched samples in the state database from a 1990 case involving the gang rape of a woman who was out walking her dog in Huntington Beach on Christmas Eve 1990.

The report claims that the victim from that case was pistol-whipped, raped repeatedly, threatened with a loaded gun and then tossed from a car–bruised, beaten and naked, except for a coat wrapped around her head.

Son’s partner-in-crime, Santiago Gaitan, pleaded guilty in January to being the other man in the car. He was sentenced to 17 years and four months in state prison.
