Former Olympic gymnast Paul Hamm was arrested Saturday night in Columbus, Ohio, for allegedly assaulting a taxi driver then wrestling with a police officer.
He has been charged with assault, criminal damaging, and for not paying for a service. Although no mugshot is currently available, we will make sure to add it to this article as soon as it does.
Hamm reportedly fell asleep during a taxi ride and when the driver woke him up, the former olympic gold medalist refused to pay for the $23 fare. After unintentionally locking the door, Hamm attempted to climb out the window and then hit the driver in the mouth with his elbow, as the driver tried to help Hamm get out. An argument then ensued resulting in Hamm damaging a window of the cab and punching and kicking the driver.
The driver then called the police, who struggled to get Hamm under control when they arrived. When asked how much he had to drink, Hamm replied, “probably eight drinks”, and during the arrest, he was overheard as saying,
“You guys are so funny. You guys have no idea. I’m going to kill you guys.”
Hamm is a three-time Olympic medalist and current Ohio State University assistant gymnastics coach. The University has stated that they are aware of Hamm’s arrest and will allow due process before determining a course of action.
