Cannon Smith, the starting quarterback for the University of Memphis and son of FedEx CEO Fred Smith, was arrested around 3:30 this morning and taken to the Shelby County Jail on charges of public intoxication and disorderly conduct. He was released on $100 bond and will appear in court Thursday morning.
According to the reports, Smith was out celebrating the end of the school semester with some friends on Beale Street and decided to take a cab home. Unfortunately, Smith and his buddies may have forgotten to check their wallets before hailing the cab and that’s when the situation went from bad to worse.
After realizing that he didn’t have any cash leftover to pay the cabbie, an argument broke out between the two, which resulted in the cops being called and Smith being taken downtown to practice his best mug shot pose. We’re not here to judge poses, but by the looks of it, he could have practiced a little longer.
Tigers head coach Larry Porter had this to say about the arrest:
“We are aware of the incident that occurred involving Cannon Smith. The matter currently is under investigation, and we are in the process of gathering all of the facts before making any decisions or public statements.”
Smith, whose real name is Frederick B “Cannon”, was first arrested in December 2006 when police found him carrying an estimated $2000 worth of ecstasy tablets during a traffic stop. He was released after posting a $7,500 bond and chose to enroll at the Hargrave Military Academy in Virginia in order to clean up his act before heading out to a bigger and better football university.
Obviously that didn’t work out exactly as planned since he was back behind bars. You would think the son of a possible billionaire would be able to pay for a stinking taxi ride. Appears as though the economy truly is hitting everybody hard these days.
Cannon joins a few famous NHL players, Brett Sutter and Patrick Kane who also cheesed for mug shots after getting into brawls with cab drivers and Kane’s altercation started over 20cents worth of change.
