Jay Mariotti charged with felony assault and stalking

Former ESPN personality Jay Mariotti has been charged with three counts of felony — stalking, domestic violence and assault — and two misdemeanor counts of disobeying a court order. The charges stem from an incident when he confronted his ex-girlfriend the same day a court ordered him to stay away from her.

He has since pleaded not guilty to the charges, but could face up to five years in state prison, if convicted.

According to the prosecutors. Mariotti not only confronted his ex-girlfriend after being ordered not to, but also became violent with her and allegedly pulled a chunk of her hair out and grabbed her cellphone, while instigating a loud verbal argument.

This news just adds more fuel to the fire against Mariotti. Since his initial arrest back in August of 2010, Mariotti has seen a significant drop in fame and work. Although he was able to avoid some serious jail time in that case, he did end up paying a hefty $50,000 bond and was subsequently let go from the ESPN network.

Since that time, the loud mouth talking head has been extremely low key, up until these recent charges were announced. He is set to appear in front of the Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Keith Schwartz on June 1 and will likely be looking at the end of his sports writing career.

Jay Mariotti charged with a felony

Jay Mariotti arrested in Los Angeles and charged with a felony. Wow, that is a line we wouldn’t expect to hear about one of the most vocal guys around who makes a living as an ESPN analyst and sportswriter, trash-talking athletes who have ruined or interrupted their careers with trips behind bars.

According to sources, a sheriff department spokesperson verified that Mariotti, 51 years old, was arrested early Saturday after being involved in some sort of a “domestic incident.” With bond said to be set at $50,000, it will be interesting the details surrounding this incident.

Mariotti who resides in L.A. is an analyst for “Around the Horn”, a high-energy, aggressively opinionated ESPN show. In addition to making trips on the show slamming teams, GMs and athletes coast-to-coast, he also runs a sports column for AOL Fanhouse.com.

Mariotti becomes the newest member of our Jocks Behind Bars and in fairness to all the athletes who have felt the wrath of Jay and websites like ours, we will update this article and be posting the Jay Mariotti mug shot if and when that becomes available.
